## In Jewish tradition

In Deuteronomy it describes God's turning away in sorrow and anger from Israel's provoking behavior, using human words for God's reaction.

**Interpretation.** Commentators read it as God withdrawing His closeness after Israel's sins. They stress that this is a way of speaking, and the same song also promises that God will finally forgive.
