Uncountable noun; we say «of small stature», not «a small stature» in most uses. Do not confuse with «statue» (a carved figure) or «statute» (a written law). It is a formal word; in everyday talk people say «height» or «how tall».

## In Jewish tradition

It means a person's height, and sometimes greatness. In the Writings and Prophets it describes a tall tree or a person, as a palm tree in the Song of Songs, and Assyria is a high cedar. "High ones of stature" are the proud, who will be cut down.

**Interpretation.** In the Torah the spies describe the Canaanites as men of great stature. Tradition sees their fear as a failure of faith in God's help. Isaiah's cutting down of the tall is read as showing that pride before God will be humbled. The Song of Songs is read as a picture of love between God and Israel.
