# sterility

noun

«sterility» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## In Jewish tradition

In Sefer Yetzirah it is the opposite of fruitfulness, one of the pairs that go with the seven double letters.

**Interpretation.** The book pairs each double letter with a quality and its opposite, such as wisdom and ignorance. This shows that creation is built on balanced opposites.

### Meaning

The condition of being unable to have children or to produce crops; barrenness. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/sterility/#m1)

### Examples

- These are double, because their opposites take part in life, opposed to Life is Death; to Peace, War; to Riches, Poverty; to Beauty or Reputation, Deformity or Disrepute; to Wisdom, Ignorance; to Fruitfulness, Sterility; to Power, Slavery.
