Stories: describing a character as stocky gives a picture of a short, sturdy, strong build, like a rugby player or a dwarf in fantasy books. Nature: some horse and dog breeds are stocky (Shetland ponies, bulldogs). It is a fairly neutral, polite word, not an insult.

Comparative: stockier, stockiest (y changes to i). Similar: sturdy, thickset, chunky. Opposite: slim, lanky, slender. Not the same as «stock» (things kept in a shop).
