## In Jewish tradition

To stretch is to reach out or spread. In the Prophets and Writings God stretches out the line to measure the earth, His hand is stretched out in judgment, and a person stretches out the hands in prayer.

**Interpretation.** Stretching out the hand is often a sign of God's power, as in the plagues, where Moses and Aaron stretch out a rod or hand. Tradition reads "outstretched arm" as a name for God's strength in the Exodus, said at the Passover seder. Stretching hands toward God is read as a picture of prayer.
