# stretchy

adjective (stretchy, stretchier, stretchiest)

«stretchy» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

Stretchy means able to stretch, to become longer or wider when you pull it, and often to go back to its shape after. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/S/stretchy/#m1)

### In the lessons

In science lessons about materials, «stretchy» is a property: rubber bands, elastic, Lycra and balloons are stretchy, while glass and wood are not. Pupils test which materials are stretchy and fair-test how far they stretch. In everyday life clothes for sport are made of stretchy fabric. Words that mean nearly the same: elastic, flexible.

### Examples

### Note

Comparative: stretchier, stretchiest. From «stretch» + -y. «Stretchy» is informal; in science reports «elastic» is the more exact word: an elastic material returns to its shape; some stretchy things (like gum) do not.
