## In Jewish tradition

In Proverbs strife is a picture of what hatred and gossip stir up, and the casting of lots is said to put an end to it.

**Interpretation.** Abram ends the quarrel with Lot because they are family. Tradition praises him for putting peace before his own rights, and sees seeking peace as a core Jewish value. Proverbs teaches that love covers wrongs while hatred stirs strife, and the rabbis warn against gossip as a cause of quarrels.
