## In Jewish tradition

To "strip" is to take the priestly clothes off Aaron, whose garments mark his office. In the Prophets it also means to take off clothes and jewels as a shame, as when a fallen city is stripped like a woman made a slave. In Proverbs "striped cloths" means cloths with lines of colour.

**Interpretation.** Moses gave Aaron's holy garments to his son Eleazar, who became high priest in his place. Tradition sees the clothes as carrying the office from one generation to the next. The prophets' stripping of a city is read as a picture of God's judgment on pride and wickedness.
