## In Jewish tradition

The dry stalks are used as a poor substitute for straw in Egypt, when Pharaoh made the Israelite slaves harder to work. In the Song at the Sea, God's anger burns up Egypt's army like stubble. In Job it is a picture of something weak and easily driven away, as when Job asks if God will pursue dry stubble, and the crocodile counts clubs as stubble.

**Interpretation.** Stubble stands in the tradition for the powerless, who cannot stand before God's wrath, and for the wicked who are burned up like it.
