Spelling: double c, double s: s-u-c-c-e-s-s. Uncountable for the idea («much success»), countable for single events («many successes»). Verb: «succeed»; adjective: «successful». Opposite: «failure». Pronounced suk-SESS.

## In Jewish tradition

In Samuel, success means that David prospered because "the LORD was with him."

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads David's success as coming from God's help, not only skill. It also stirs Saul's fear and jealousy.
