# successive

adjective

«successive» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

Coming or happening one after another, in a row, without a break. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/S/successive/#m1)

### In the lessons

In sport and news: «three successive wins» means three wins in a row. In maths, «successive numbers» are numbers that follow each other, like 4, 5, 6 (also called consecutive numbers). In science: readings on successive days. Phrases: «successive days», «successive years», «successive wins», «for the third successive time».

### Note

Adverb: «successively». Trap: «successive» (one after another) is not «successful» (doing well). In maths, «successive» = «consecutive»: two successive whole numbers differ by 1, so if their sum is S, the smaller is (S − 1) ÷ 2.

### Examples

- all the triliteral combinations, leaving sufficient space between two successive combinations for the addition of a new letter; then by adding an x at the beginning of each triliteral com- bination, we shall attain 10,648 quadriliterals beginning with an N.
