### In the lessons

In maths, numbers that get «successively larger» increase each time (2, 4, 8, 16). In history, kings ruled successively one after the other. In science instructions you add things successively, one at a time. It is a formal word; people often say «one after another» or «in turn». Phrases: successively larger, successively smaller.

### Note

Formal adverb. From «successive» (one after the other) and «succession». Do not confuse with «successfully» (with success). In maths «successively doubled» means double, then double the result again.
