### In the lessons

Everyday life: dads, mums and teachers may wear suits for work or weddings; children wear swimsuits and wetsuits at the beach. In maths, card suits are used in probability: a pack has 52 cards, 4 suits, 13 cards in each. In stories, «follow suit» means do the same as someone else. Phrases: a suit and tie, spacesuit, wetsuit, suit yourself, follow suit, it suits you.

### Note

Pronounced «soot» (rhymes with boot). Do not confuse with «sweet» or «suite» (a set of rooms or matching furniture, said «sweet»). Maths: 52 cards ÷ 4 suits = 13 cards per suit. «Suit yourself» means «do what you like» and can sound a bit cross.

## In Jewish tradition

"Make suit unto" means to plead with someone or seek their favor. A "suit" can also mean a legal case or complaint brought for judgment.

**Interpretation.** Absalom's wish to hear every man's suit shows the judge's duty to do justice. Tradition treats judging fairly as a basic duty of a ruler.

### Examples

- Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee. (Writings JOB.11.19, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/suit/#x1)

- Absalom said moreover: 'Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!' (Prophets 2SA.15.4, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/suit/#x3)
