### Meaning

A sunbather is a person who lies or sits in the sun, often at a beach or pool, to relax or get a tan.

### In the lessons

In beach scenes in stories and summer pictures, sunbathers lie on towels. In health and safety lessons (especially Australia and New Zealand: «Slip, Slop, Slap»), children learn that too much sun burns skin and can cause skin cancer, so sunbathers need sunscreen, hats and shade. Phrases: «sunbathers on the beach», «a lone sunbather».

### Examples

- The beach was crowded with sunbathers.
- A seagull stole a sandwich from a sunbather.
- The lifeguard told the sunbathers about the jellyfish.
- Sunbathers should wear sunscreen and drink water.
- One sunbather fell asleep and got sunburnt.
- The lizard is a sunbather too, warming itself on a rock.

### Note

Countable. From «sunbathe» (verb: sunbathe, sunbathed, sunbathing). Myth: «A tan is healthy» — a tan is actually skin damage from the sun.
