# sunglasses

noun, plural only (sunglasses; a pair of sunglasses)

«sunglasses» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

Sunglasses are glasses with dark or tinted lenses that protect your eyes from bright sunlight. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/S/sunglasses/#m1)

### In the lessons

Sun safety lessons: «Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide» (Australia and New Zealand) — slip on a shirt, slop on sun cream, slap on a hat, seek shade, slide on sunglasses. Good sunglasses block UV light, which can harm your eyes; they are also needed on snow and water, which reflect sunlight. Never look straight at the Sun, even with sunglasses; they do not make it safe. Phrases: «a pair of sunglasses», «put on your sunglasses», «wear sunglasses».

### Note

Always plural: «My sunglasses are on the table», not «my sunglass is». For one item say «a pair of sunglasses». Informal: «shades» or «sunnies» (Australia, New Zealand). Dark lenses alone are not enough; they should block UV.
