# supernova

noun (a supernova, supernovae or supernovas)

«supernova» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

A supernova is a gigantic explosion of a star at the end of its life, which can shine brighter than a whole galaxy for a short time. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/S/supernova/#m1)

### In the lessons

In science and space lessons, very big stars end their lives as supernovae, leaving a neutron star or black hole. Supernovae spread elements like iron and gold into space, so the atoms in our bodies were made in stars. A supernova was seen from Earth in 1054 and made the Crab Nebula.

### Examples

- A supernova is the explosion of a huge star. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/S/supernova/#x1)

### Note

Plural: supernovae (said soo-per-NOH-vee) or supernovas. A nova is a smaller star blast. Our Sun will not become a supernova; it will become a red giant and then a white dwarf.
