## In Jewish tradition

The pig is named as an unclean animal. It has split hooves but does not chew its cud, so it may not be eaten.

**Interpretation.** The pig is the classic example in Jewish law of a forbidden food, in the rules of kashrut. Tradition says an animal must have both signs to be kosher.
