In everyday life and maths word problems about shops, school fairs and cake stalls; the takings are the total money taken in. To find takings, add the money from each sale or multiply price × number sold. US English more often says «receipts» or «sales».

### Note

Always plural: «the takings were good», not «the taking was». Takings are the money coming in, before costs are taken away; profit is what is left after costs. In maths: takings = price × number sold, then profit = takings − costs.
