# th

fragment (th — letters; also suffix -th)

«th» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Not a full word: the two letters "t" and "h" that together make one sound, as in "the" or "think". [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#m1)
2. The ending "-th" that makes ordinal numbers: 4th, 5th, 20th. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#m2)
3. An abbreviation, for example "Th" for Thursday. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#m3)

### In the lessons

In reading (phonics), "th" is a digraph with two sounds: soft in "think", buzzy in "this". In maths, "-th" turns numbers into ordinals (fourth, tenth) and also fractions (a fifth, a tenth). Phrases: 4th place, one tenth.

### Examples

- "Th" makes the first sound in "thumb". [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#x1)
- She came 4th in the race. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#x2)
- One tenth is written 1/10. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#x3)
- The "th" in "this" buzzes. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#x4)
- Today is the 9th. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#x5)
- Write the "th" in "bath" carefully. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#x6)

### Note

"-th" is used for ordinals except first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd) and numbers ending in them like 21st, 22nd, 23rd; but 11th, 12th, 13th. In maths, "a fifth" = 1/5, so "-th" can mean a fraction.
