### Meaning

1. (historical euphemism) the Nazi German government's secret name for its plan to murder all the Jews of Europe, carried out during the Second World War.
2. (warning) any plan whose aim is to destroy a whole group of people.

### In the lessons

This is a terrible example of a euphemism used to hide mass murder behind calm, official-sounding words. Historians and teachers use it in history lessons about the Holocaust, always explaining what it really meant. Today people should never use it casually or as a joke.

### Examples

- (history lesson) The Nazis used the words "the Final Solution" to hide their plan to murder millions of Jews.
- (textbook) The Final Solution led to the deaths of about six million Jewish people.
- (museum) This room explains how officials planned the Final Solution in secret meetings.
- (teacher) Notice how a dull phrase can hide a terrible crime.
- (news) Survivors spoke to students about the Final Solution and the Holocaust.
- (warning) Never call a plan "the final solution" — the words carry the memory of genocide.

### Note

Trap: it is not about a maths problem's last answer. Because of its history it is deeply offensive in jokes or ordinary talk; say «the last step» or «a lasting fix» instead. It shows how official, polite language can hide evil — an important reason to look past euphemisms.
