### Meaning

1. (slang, US) the toilet.
2. (slang, US) a man who pays for something shady.

### In the lessons

A casual American word for the toilet, used in jokes and everyday talk among adults. It is informal, a little crude but not a swear word. In other countries people say «the loo» (UK) or «the dunny» (Australia).

### Examples

- (US) "Where's Dad?" "In the john."
- (film) He locked himself in the john to make the call.
- (chat) brb john
- (office) Someone left the light on in the john again.
- (joke) My little brother spends hours in the john with his comic books.
- (road trip) Pull over, I need the john!
- (sitcom) The plumber fixed the john.

### Note

Trap: «John» with a capital is a common man's name; «the john» (with «the», lowercase) is a toilet. US slang; British pupils may not know it. Too informal for a polite request: say «the restroom» or «the bathroom».
