### Meaning

1. (everyday, UK) the women's public toilet.
2. (ordinary) women, said politely: «ladies».

### In the lessons

A short everyday British, Irish and Commonwealth word on signs and in speech, from «ladies' toilet», avoiding the word «toilet». Neutral and polite. In the US: «the ladies' room» or «the women's restroom».

### Examples

- (café) Excuse me, where's the ladies?
- (sign) Ladies ←
- (shopping centre) Mum's in the ladies, wait here.
- (chat) gonna nip to the ladies, save my seat
- (theatre) There's always a long queue for the ladies at the interval.
- (polite) "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen."
- (gossip) I overheard them chatting in the ladies.

### Note

Trap: «the ladies» (one room, a toilet) takes a singular verb: «The ladies is on the left.» «Ladies and gentlemen» means women and men, not toilets. Men's version: «the gents».
