### Meaning

1. (euphemism, humorous) the toilet.
2. (ordinary) the special chair a king or queen sits on.
3. the position of being king or queen: «come to the throne».

### In the lessons

A jokey way to speak of the toilet, as if it were a royal seat; used among friends and in family jokes in all English-speaking countries. The royal sense is common in history and stories.

### Examples

- (joke) Dad's been on the throne for twenty minutes!
- (chat) reading on the throne again
- (story, royal) The queen sat on her golden throne.
- (history) The prince came to the throne when his father died.
- (fairy tale) The throne was made of ivory and gold.
- (family) "Where's Grandpa?" "Upon the throne!"
- (news) The heir to the throne visited the school.

### Note

Trap: in history and stories the throne is a royal seat; only in jokes about the bathroom is it the toilet. «Come to the throne» = become king or queen.
