### Meaning

1. (euphemism, historical, Ireland and UK) the long violent conflict in Northern Ireland, with bombings and shootings between groups who wanted to stay in the UK and groups who wanted a united Ireland.
2. (ordinary) «troubles» = problems or worries.

### In the lessons

People in Ireland and Britain say «the Troubles», a mild-sounding word, for decades of killings and fear; it softens a painful history and avoids taking sides with words like «war». Used in news, history lessons and family stories.

### Examples

- (history) Thousands of people died during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
- (Grandad) We grew up during the Troubles; there were soldiers on the streets.
- (news) A new museum tells the story of the Troubles.
- (school) Our class read letters written during the Troubles.
- (peace) The peace agreement helped bring the Troubles to an end.
- (ordinary) She told me all her troubles over tea.
- (story) The old man had seen his share of troubles.

### Note

Trap: «the Troubles» with a capital T is the Northern Ireland conflict, not small worries. The word sounds small but the events were deadly; speak about it respectfully, as many families lost people.
