# therefor

adverb (therefor — archaic, legal)

«therefor» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

(archaic, legal) Therefor means «for that» or «for it»: «goods and the payment therefor» means the goods and the payment for them. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/therefor/#m1)

### In the lessons

A very old-fashioned word found only in legal papers and old texts. Children are more likely to meet it as a spelling mistake for «therefore». In lessons: do not use it; use «for it» or «for that».

### Examples

- The contract lists the goods and the price therefor. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/therefor/#x1)
- He was punished and given no reason therefor. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/therefor/#x2)
- In old laws you may read «a fee shall be paid therefor». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/therefor/#x3)
- Therefor is not the same as therefore. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/therefor/#x4)

### Note

Trap: «therefor» (no e, means «for that») is not «therefore» (with e, means «so, because of that»). In almost all school writing you want «therefore». Stress is on the end: there-FOR.

## In Jewish tradition

For that, as a result of it. Here a man dies for his own sin.

**Interpretation.** Ezekiel is read as teaching that each person answers for his own deeds and may turn back by repentance.

### Examples

- When the righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall die therefor; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. (Prophets EZK.18.26, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/T/therefor/#x1)

### Note

Trap: «therefor» (no e, means «for that») is not «therefore» (with e, means «so, because of that»). In almost all school writing you want «therefore». Stress is on the end: there-FOR.
