# thereto

adverb (thereto — formal, legal)

«thereto» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition and Early Modern English — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

(formal, legal) Thereto means «to that» or «to it», referring to something already mentioned. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thereto/#m1)

### In the lessons

It appears in legal documents, contracts and very formal exam language: «the rules and any changes thereto». In everyday life it is almost never used; people say «to it». Phrases: attached thereto, changes thereto, agreed thereto.

### Examples

- Read the contract and the notes attached thereto. (formal) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thereto/#x1)

- In plain English: «the rules and changes to them». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thereto/#x6)

### Note

A very formal, legal adverb; use «to it» or «to that» in normal writing. Similar words: «thereof» (of it), «therein» (in it), «thereby» (by that). It does not give a number in maths problems.

## In Jewish tradition

Old formal word meaning "to it." The Torah uses it for adding something to an object, and for the command not to add to the law.

**Interpretation.** The command "thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it" is read as a rule that no one may add to or subtract from the commandments.
