# thickness

noun (thickness, thicknesses)

«thickness» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Thickness is how thick something is: the distance from one side to the other through it. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#m1)
2. Thickness is how dense or not runny something is, like a liquid or fog. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#m2)
3. A thickness is a layer of something. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#m3)

### In the lessons

In maths and science lessons thickness is a measurement, often in millimetres or centimetres: «the thickness of a book». Thickness of ice matters for safety on frozen ponds. In cooking it tells how runny a sauce is. Phrases: «a thickness of», «measure the thickness».

### Examples

- Measure the thickness of the book with a ruler. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x1)
- The ice was only 2 centimetres in thickness, so it was not safe. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x2)
- The wall has a thickness of 30 centimetres. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x3)
- Fold the paper to double its thickness. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x4)
- The thickness of the soup was just right. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x5)
- Wrap the parcel in two thicknesses of paper. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x6)
- Each coin has a thickness of 2 millimetres, so a stack of 10 is 20 millimetres tall. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x7)
- He pointed to one corner, in which lay the great Head, made out of many thicknesses of paper, and with a carefully painted face. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/thickness/#x8)

### Note

Thickness is a length, so it uses length units (mm, cm, m). In maths, a stack's height = number of items × thickness of each. Safety: never walk on ice unless an adult says it is thick enough.

## In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: The pillars of the Temple were described precisely. The tradition keeps their size as a memory of the First Temple, destroyed by Babylon. In the primary lessons: In maths and science lessons thickness is a measurement, often in millimetres or centimetres: «the thickness of a book». Thickness of ice matters for safety on frozen ponds. In cooking it tells how runny a sauce is. Phrases: «a thickness of», «measure the thickness».

### Examples

- And as for the pillars, the height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a line of twelve cubits did compass it; and the thickness thereof was four fingers; it was hollow. (Prophets JER.52.21, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/T/thickness/#x1)
