# throat

noun (a throat, throats)

«throat» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Your throat is the inside of your neck, the tube that food, drink and air go down. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/throat/#m1)
2. The throat can also mean the front of the neck. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/throat/#m2)

### In the lessons

In science the throat leads to two tubes: the food pipe (oesophagus) to the stomach and the windpipe (trachea) to the lungs; a small flap stops food going down the wrong way. Your voice box is in your throat. In health lessons a sore throat is a common sign of a cold, and small objects can block the throat and cause choking, so chew food well and keep tiny things away from babies. Phrases: sore throat, clear your throat, lump in your throat, cut-throat.
