# throes

noun

«throes» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## In Jewish tradition

In Hosea and Isaiah, "throes" are the labor pains of childbirth, used as a picture of sudden terror and pain.

**Interpretation.** The prophets use birth pains to show how suddenly and unavoidably judgment comes. Tradition also reads such pains as leading toward something new, as in the "birth pangs" before a time of redemption.

### Meaning

Sharp, violent pains, like the pains of a woman giving birth, or great struggle and agony. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/T/throes/#m1)

### Examples

- The throes of a travailing woman shall come upon him; he is an unwise son; for it is time he should not tarry in the place of the breaking forth of children. (Prophets HOS.13.13, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/T/throes/#x1)
