## In Jewish tradition

Used for driving out the Canaanite nations before Israel, and in the laws of killing, where a shove in hatred differs from one without enmity. In the prophets and psalms, God thrusts down the proud, and enemies thrust at the psalmist to make him fall.

**Interpretation.** The law distinguishes accidental from deliberate killing; the one who killed by accident could flee to a city of refuge. The psalms are read as saying that God helps the faithful when enemies push them, and brings down the wicked.
