### Meaning

1. (euphemism, humorous, UK) drunk.
2. (literal) truly tired and feeling strong emotions, e.g. after a long day or a sad event.

### In the lessons

A famous British newspaper joke: reporters could not call a politician drunk without risking a court case, so they wrote «tired and emotional». Now used with a wink in UK news, gossip and among adults. The literal sense is also common.

### Examples

- (news) The minister appeared tired and emotional after a long lunch.
- (gossip) Uncle Ray got a bit tired and emotional at the wedding.
- (chat) everyone was tired and emotional by the end of the party, if you know what i mean
- (literal) After the funeral the family were tired and emotional.
- (literal) After the school play, the cast were tired and emotional and hugged each other.
- (sitcom) "Is he drunk?" "Let's say tired and emotional."

### Note

Trap: often literal — after a long day, a baby crying, a sad event. It means drunk only with a wink in the context (parties, lunches, politicians). Do not read every «tired and emotional» as a hint.
