### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) the official reason given when someone is forced to leave a job, especially a politician or boss after a scandal or failure.
2. (literal) to be at home more with one's family.

### In the lessons

Companies, politicians and press offices use it to make a sacking or forced resignation sound like a free, happy choice; news readers and the public often hear it with a smile. Literally, it is a real, kind reason people change jobs.

### Examples

- (news) The chief executive resigned "to spend more time with his family".
- (gossip) "Spend more time with his family"? He was pushed out!
- (cartoon) Every disgraced minister wants to spend more time with family.

### Note

Trap: sometimes it is true. When it follows a scandal or bad results, it usually hides being fired. Notice who says it and when.
