### Meaning

1. (euphemism) told someone angrily to go away, using rude words (to go to hell or a ruder phrase).
2. (literal) gave someone directions.

### In the lessons

A way to report that someone was very rude or angry without repeating the swear words; everyday in all English-speaking countries, in gossip and storytelling. It shows the speaker stood up for themselves or lost their temper.

### Examples

- (gossip) When he asked for more money, she told him where to go.
- (proud) The boss tried to bully me, so I told him where to go.
- (chat) some guy tried to cut the queue, my nan told him where to go
- (news) The striking workers told the company where to go.
- (literal) A friendly policeman told us where to go for the museum.
- (story) "If they ask again, tell them where they can go!"

### Note

Trap: «told us where to go» can be simple directions. In a story about a quarrel it means a rude dismissal. It reports rudeness without the rude words.
