## In Jewish tradition

Means a merchant, as in Ezekiel's long list of the trading partners of Tyre. In Hosea it describes a dishonest merchant with false scales.

**Interpretation.** Hosea's cheating merchant is read as a picture of Israel's dishonesty. The law demands honest weights and measures, and cheating in business is treated as a serious sin.
