### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) the last years of a person's life, in old age.
2. (by extension) the last stage of something, e.g. a career or an empire.

### In the lessons

A soft, poetic way to talk about old age and approaching death, using «twilight» (the dim light after sunset). Used in adverts for care homes, in news and in kind speech in all English-speaking countries.

### Examples

- (advert) Comfortable care for your twilight years.
- (news) The actor spent his twilight years by the sea.
- (family) Grandma wants to enjoy her twilight years in her garden.
- (history) In its twilight years the empire grew weak.
- (sport) In the twilight years of her career she became a coach.
- (story) In his twilight years he wrote down his memories.

### Note

Trap: not about evenings. A kind phrase, but some old people find it gloomy. «Twilight» = the half-light at dusk.
