### In the lessons

In news and history, unarmed people are those who cannot fight back, so attacking them is especially wrong. In the police in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, most officers are unarmed (they do not carry guns). In stories, a hero facing a monster unarmed is in danger. In The Wind in the Willows, Mole goes into the Wild Wood alone and unarmed, and Ratty comes after him with pistols and a cudgel.

Prefix un- = not: un + armed. Opposite: armed. Do not confuse with «disarmed» (had weapons taken away; or charmed).
