### Meaning

1. (everyday) a little ill or tired; not feeling well.
2. (euphemism, humorous) drunk or hungover.

### In the lessons

A mild, polite way to say you are unwell without giving details; used when calling in sick, at school and with family in all English-speaking countries. Sometimes it hides a hangover.

### Examples

- (phone) I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so I won't come in today.
- (Mum) You look under the weather — have an early night.
- (school) Sam's under the weather, so he's staying home.
- (chat) bit under the weather today, staying in bed
- (gossip) He was "under the weather" after the party, if you know what I mean.
- (email) Apologies, I'm under the weather and will reply tomorrow.

### Note

Trap: nothing to do with rain or sunshine. Means only slightly ill, not seriously. Sometimes a polite cover for a hangover.
