### Meaning

1. (euphemism, estate agents) a poor or run-down neighbourhood that the speaker claims will soon become popular and expensive.
2. (literal) an area that really is improving.

### In the lessons

Estate agents and property adverts use it to make a cheap, rough area sound exciting; readers often hear it as code for «not nice yet». Common in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the US. «Up-and-coming» also describes rising stars: an up-and-coming singer.

### Examples

- (advert) Two-bedroom flat in an up-and-coming area!
- (joke) "Up-and-coming area" means the burnt-out car hasn't been towed yet.
- (news) Artists moved to the up-and-coming area because rents were low.
- (family) It's an up-and-coming area — new cafés are opening.
- (music) She's an up-and-coming singer.
- (chat) we live in an "up-and-coming area" aka there are sirens all night

### Note

Trap: in an advert it may be spin. It can be true; check the facts (crime, shops, schools). Hyphens: up-and-coming before a noun.
