### In the lessons

In history lessons (especially in the UK and Ireland) pupils learn about Viking raids on monasteries like Lindisfarne, Viking settlements such as York (Jorvik) and Dublin, their gods (Odin, Thor, Loki), runes, sagas and long journeys to Iceland, Greenland and North America. Pupils also learn that most Vikings were farmers and traders, not only fighters. Words like «sky», «egg», «window» and «Thursday» came into English from the Vikings' language.
