### In the lessons

In science lessons vines show how plants grow towards light and use other things for support; their curling stems are called tendrils. In everyday life you see vines on garden walls, trellises and fences (ivy, grapes, beans, pumpkins, melons). In stories, explorers and monkeys swing from vine to vine through the jungle. Phrases: «grapevine», «climbing vine», «hear it on the grapevine» (hear news as a rumour).

### Note

Countable: a vine, two vines. Not the same as «wine» (a drink made from grapes) — vine and wine sound alike but are different words. Some vines, like poison ivy, can give you an itchy rash, so do not touch plants you do not know. «To hear something on the grapevine» means to hear it as gossip, not from an official source.

## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah and prophets, the vine is the plant that grows grapes. The prophets and psalms also use it as a picture of Israel and of the land's good harvest, and its failing as a sign of trouble.

**Interpretation.** The vine is one of the seven kinds of fruit that praise the Land of Israel. Wine from its grapes is used in blessings and holiday meals. The tradition reads Isaiah's vine as a picture of Israel, which God planted and cared for.
