### Meaning

(official, polite) partly or completely unable to see; having poor sight that glasses cannot fully fix.

### In the lessons

The respectful, official term used by schools, doctors, charities and governments in all English-speaking countries; it covers both partial sight and blindness. Many blind people also say simply «blind» or «partially sighted».

### Examples

- (school) The school has a teacher for visually impaired pupils.
- (sign) Assistance for visually impaired passengers.
- (news) A visually impaired runner won the race with a guide.
- (charity) Guide dogs help visually impaired people cross roads safely.
- (science) Braille lets visually impaired readers read by touch.
- (web) Websites should work for visually impaired users with screen readers.

### Note

Trap: it is not only total blindness. «Impaired» = damaged or weakened. Ask a person which word they like; many prefer «blind» or «partially sighted».
