### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) someone tells fibs or invents things, or daydreams too much.
2. (literal, positive) the ability to imagine things clearly and creatively.

### In the lessons

Teachers in school reports, parents and polite adults use «has a vivid imagination» to hint that a child makes things up, kindly. It can also be pure praise for creative writing. All English-speaking countries.

### Examples

- (school report) Tom has a very vivid imagination.
- (parent) "There's a tiger in the garden!" "You have a vivid imagination."
- (police, ironic) The witness has a rather vivid imagination.
- (praise) Her stories show a vivid imagination.
- (chat) my little sister says she saw a ghost, she has a vivid imagination lol
- (teacher) Use your vivid imagination to describe a dragon.

### Note

Trap: praise for a story, but on a report or when someone is telling an unlikely tale, it can hint «tells fibs». Context and tone decide.
