### Meaning

1. (ordinary) a school where people learn practical job skills, like cooking or building.
2. (euphemism, official) a name used by some governments for prison camps where people are held without trial and forced to change their beliefs.

### In the lessons

Ordinary use is in education. As a euphemism, it hides detention camps behind a calm, school-like name, and appears in news and human-rights reports that criticise it. A strong example of how official words can hide abuse.

### Examples

- (education) My cousin learned plumbing at the vocational training centre.
- (job advert) Apply now to our vocational training centre for mechanics.
- (news) Officials called the camps "vocational training centres", but former detainees described prisons.
- (report) Human-rights groups say the so-called vocational training centres hold people against their will.
- (school, citizenship) Discuss why a government might give a prison a school name.
- (chat) the "vocational training centre" in the news isn't a real school

### Note

Trap: usually a real school. In news about detention, «so-called» or quotation marks show it is a euphemism. Spelling: «centre» UK, «center» US.
