## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it often means ritually cleansed, as when Moses washed Aaron and his sons to make them priests. In the Psalms "washed my hands in innocency" means keeping oneself free of wrongdoing, and in the Song of Songs it describes bathing feet and eyes "washed with milk."

**Interpretation.** The washing of Aaron and his sons was part of their ordination. Tradition also links it with the immersion in a mikveh for purity. The Song of Songs is read as a love song between God and Israel.
