## In Jewish tradition

In the offerings, to "wave" means the priest lifts and moves the offering back and forth before the LORD. A "wave-offering" is a portion given to God this way and then given to the priests. In the Psalms and Samuel, "waves" are the sea's surges, used as a picture of danger and trouble, or of God calming the storm.

**Interpretation.** Tradition says the waving was done in all directions, toward the four winds and up and down, to show that God rules everywhere. The waves of Death and of God's wrath are read as figures for great distress from which God can save.
