### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) we have not decided anything yet; or we are planning something unpleasant but won't say it.
2. (literal) we are carefully looking at the choices we have.

### In the lessons

Companies, governments and sports clubs say it to avoid giving answers to the press, or to hint at cuts, sackings or legal action without saying so. All English-speaking countries. It sounds calm and controlled.

### Examples

- (news) A spokesperson said, "We are reviewing our options."
- (sport) After the loss, the club is reviewing its options for the manager.
- (business) The company is reviewing its options after the factory flood.
- (family, literal) We're reviewing our options for the summer holiday.
- (school) The school is reviewing its options for the trip.
- (chat) my landlord said he's "reviewing his options" — uh oh

### Note

Trap: often truly neutral. In news it may hide a plan to fire someone, sue or close. Notice what is not said.
