### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) you have been rejected or fired; we don't want you (for a job, a role or a project).
2. (literal) we have chosen a different route.

### In the lessons

Employers, film studios, sports clubs and publishers use it to reject people without giving reasons; it sounds calm and avoids blame. All English-speaking countries. Many people recognise it as a polite «no».

### Examples

- (email) Thank you for your application, but we've decided to go in a different direction.
- (TV) The studio decided to go in a different direction and recast the role.
- (sport) The club decided to go in a different direction with the manager.
- (chat) they said "we've decided to go in a different direction" lol so i didn't get the job
- (literal) The map was wrong, so we decided to go in a different direction.
- (school) For our project, we decided to go in a different direction and build a robot instead.

### Note

Trap: sometimes literal (on a walk) or a real change of plan. Said to someone about their job or audition, it means «no» or «you're out». Don't take it personally.
