### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) being very overweight (obesity).
2. (less often) being dangerously underweight.

### In the lessons

A polite, kinder way to say someone is fat or obese, used in health talk, gossip and news in all English-speaking countries; it avoids hurtful words. Doctors may say «obesity».

### Examples

- (doctor) He has struggled with a weight problem for many years.
- (news) Many children have a weight problem because of sugary drinks.
- (gossip) She's always had a weight problem.
- (health class) Healthy food and exercise help prevent a weight problem.
- (chat) my dog has a weight problem lol, too many treats
- (science) The doctor measures height and weight to check for a weight problem.

### Note

Trap: polite, but still about someone's body — don't comment on people's weight. It can mean too light, not just too heavy. Plain word: «obese» (medical).
