### Meaning

1. (euphemism, humorous) fat; plump.
2. (literal) having plenty of soft padding, e.g. a chair or a jacket.

### In the lessons

A gentle, jokey way to say someone is fat, used by older people and in light humour in all English-speaking countries; still personal. The literal sense is everyday.

### Examples

- (joke) Grandad says he's well-padded for the winter.
- (gossip) The new teacher is a bit well-padded.
- (literal) The chair is well-padded and comfortable.
- (sport) Hockey players wear well-padded gloves.
- (shop) This well-padded jacket keeps you warm.
- (chat) my cat is well-padded, aka chonky

### Note

Trap: usually literal (chairs, coats, helmets). About a person it means fat — don't say it to them. Similar: «well-upholstered».
