### Meaning

1. (euphemism, old-fashioned) spent time in a psychiatric hospital or clinic.
2. (literal) went on a holiday or break to relax.

### In the lessons

Older families used it to hide that someone had a mental breakdown and had hospital treatment, because of shame. Today people speak more openly. The literal sense is everyday.

### Examples

- (old gossip) Aunt Hilda went away for a rest after her husband died.
- (old novel) The actress went away for a rest, the papers said.
- (family) Grandma said Uncle Ted "went away for a rest" — we found out later it was hospital.
- (literal) We went away for a rest at the seaside.
- (literal) After exams, Mum and Dad went away for a rest.
- (today) He spent a few weeks in hospital for depression and is much better now.

### Note

Trap: usually literal. In older stories about a person who suddenly disappeared, it can hide mental-health treatment. No shame in mental illness — it is treatable.
